Ernie Harwell, The Voice Of The Detroit Tigers, Passed Away

05/05/10 4:50 AM ET
DETROIT -- The man who will forever be the voice of the Tigers is gone, and the Baseball community is left silent in remembrance. Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell passed away Tuesday at age 92.
Harwell succumbed to cancer of the bile duct, and passed away at his home in Novi, Mich. Doctors diagnosed the condition as an aggressive form in August, and Harwell and his family decided against surgery at his age. He explained his situation with an extraordinary sense of peace, both to his friends in the community and to fans at Comerica Park when he made one last visit in September. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE.

Bat Girls To Fight Breast Cancer

02/25/10 12:00 PM EST

Baseball has the power to bring people together, and soon enough real Major League Baseball games will do that on a daily basis at ballparks again.

It can also help empower those with common interests, such as better understanding and eradicating breast cancer in our lifetime. The 2010 season marks the sixth year that MLB has joined forces with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help raise awareness of breast cancer and drive funding for research and treatment. This year's drive is officially under way with Thursday's launch of the Honorary Bat Girl Contest, a campaign developed to recognize baseball fans who are "Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer" in their daily lives.

Men and women 18 and older can vote and enter on MLB.com to win a chance at becoming an Honorary Bat Girl (female or male) during scheduled May 9 Mother's Day celebrations. Each Honorary Bat Girl will have an opportunity to take part in pregame activities, be honored during an on-field ceremony and receive two tickets to the game and pink MLB merchandise. Fan submissions are accepted on April 13, and based on last year's introductory campaign, it will be inspirational and moving.  To read more CLICK HERE

Johnny Damon Open To Toronto?

"On Thursday night during the Blue Jays' annual State of the Franchise event for season-ticket holders, general manager Alex Anthopoulos told the fans in attendance that the club had contacted Damon's agent, Scott Boras, earlier this week. Toronto has jobs up for grabs in left field and in the leadoff spot -- roles Damon could potentially fill."
